Naval tromblon. A heavy bronze cannon with a five-sided barrel, 16 cm in diameter, flaring out sharply towards the muzzle. The left side bears three hallmarks and master armourer’s marks typical of London in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. Round-bodied lock, steel pan with a spark guard, round swan-neck hammer (the flint hold and its screw may have been replaced), wheel-type firing spring, functional lock, marked ‘St Etienne en forêt’. Light walnut stock with a decoration of military trophies on the rear of the butt plate. Steel butt plate, scalloped and engraved with a floral design; all steel fittings decorated in the same style. Rear steel rib. This firearm is highly representative of the practices of the period, which involved mounting a high-quality English bronze barrel on a French frame with a locally signed lock plate.
