Description
Receipt for 102 francs for an engraving of the First Consul, signed by the artist ISABEY, for a pre-print copy, framed, from Mrs … 8.5 x 15 cm (viewing area), in frame. ISABEY Jean-Baptiste, a miniaturist painter born in Nancy in 1764 and who died in 1855, had been a pupil of DAVID. After studying historical painting, he devoted himself entirely to miniature painting, in which he achieved the highest distinction; he also excelled in painting on enamel and porcelain, and in watercolour. He was successively appointed principal painter at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory, painter to the Emperor and then to Louis XVIII, organiser of court festivities, and assistant curator of the imperial museums (1827). Isabey produced miniature portraits of Europe’s leading figures, from Napoleon to Emperor Alexander; in the painting known as *La Barque d’Isabey*, he brought together miniature portraits of his family members; among his paintings on porcelain, *La table des maréchaux* stands out; among his sepia drawings, *The First Consul’s Visit to the Oberkampf Manufactory in Jouy* and *The Parade in front of the Tuileries* are notable.
