Description
Nihonto, known as the naginata,
as it is both a form of Japanese fencing and a Japanese martial art in its own right;
this discipline dates back to around the 9th century. The naginata practised today is a modern form of the weapon, open to competition.
This example features a lacquered wooden handle and a curved blade similar to the Chinese guan dao.
The curved-bladed scythe was highly prized by Buddhist warrior monks; it was used to bend the legs of horses.
Here, it is in good condition and retains its full length, including the tang.
Curved blade: 38 cm
Total length: 2m35
