Chassepot Model 1866 artillery carbine, 11 mm calibre, from the X series. Round barrel with fluted breech, dated S1870, with rear sight. Breech block marked ‘MANUFACTURE IMPERIALE ST ETIENNE Mle 1866’. Breech block without gas seal and with firing pin, featuring a cranked lever. Stamped brass fittings. Butt plate stamped ‘AP ’. Walnut stock bearing the ‘MA’ mark, with serial number X 20, which is also found on the barrel, the breech and the tenon. Stock rail with another serial number ‘X’. Fine rifling. Barrel length: 51.5 cm. Overall length: 99 cm. B.E. With Chassepot bayonet, single serial number X 411, yatagan blade marked ‘St Etienne July 1871’. The ‘X’ series corresponds to training weapons. According to the Artillery Officers’ Handbook (1879), the marking on the butt plate may correspond to pontoon artillerymen; other theories suggest it relates to the Paris workshops.
