Description
France: Order of the Silver Lily. Silver, enamel, ribbon with tassel. Accompanied by a printed letter: Count De Bouthillier, Knight of the Royal and Military Order of St Louis, Officer of the Legion of Honour, Prefect of the Bas-Rhin Department. Certificate in the name of Gervais Staeble, Tax Collector at Roeschmien. Issued at Strasbourg, 10 May 1816. Signed by the Prefect. Framed in period frame under glass. (foxing)
Bouthillier-Chavigny Constantin-Marie-Louis-Léon, Marquis de (1774–1829) In 1790, he was appointed Captain in the King’s Infantry Regiment, at the Queen’s request, for having suppressed a revolt during the Affair of Nancy. He resigned in 1791 to go into exile and served in the Army of the Princes, later becoming a colonel in the Army of Condé. Returning to France under the Consulate, he served as an Auditor at the Council of State in 1810, as Mayor of Autouillet, and as Sub-Prefect of Alba, then of Minden. During the Restoration, Louis XVIII appointed him Prefect of the Var and awarded him the Legion of Honour. During the Hundred Days, he was imprisoned. At the time of the Second Restoration, he served as Prefect of Meurthe, then of the Bas-Rhin, and was dismissed in September 1819. In 1820, he was an ultra-royalist Member of Parliament. In 1822, he was appointed Chief Administrator of the Post Office and a Councillor of State. In 1824, he became the first Director-General of Forests.
