MEMORABILIA from the French Battalion in Korea. Set of insignia and decorations belonging to Sergeant Claude RAVALET of the French Battalion in Korea: the TOE Cross, the Military Medal with the ‘Far East’ bar and ribbon, Bronze Star in its case with ribbon, embroidered UN BF beret badge, metal beret badge no. 427, manufactured by Arthus Bertrand and signed R. LOUIS, metal ‘Drago’ badge, 43 Rue Olivier Métra, locally made ‘COREE’ embroidered belt pouch in yellow thread, a pair of non-commissioned officer’s belt pouches in gold canetille embroidered with ‘COREE’, Colonial non-commissioned officer’s diamond, 2nd DIUS patch, signalman’s diamond, enamelled metal collar insignia of the 2nd DIUS and the US 23rd Infantry Regiment (Japanese-made with totem), Presidential Unit Citation ribbon with 2 “Clusters” (3 citations), metal badge of the Mobile Defence Units in Indochina, manufactured by AUGIS in Lyon, 2 religious medals, dog tag bearing the name Claude RAVALET, nickel-plated brass DRAGO lighter bearing the UN BF insignia. The French UN Battalion, comprising some 3,400 volunteers, was deployed to Korea between 1950 and 1953 to defend South Korea against the North Korean and subsequently Chinese invasion. It distinguished itself notably in the battles of Wonju, Chipyong-ni, Crèvecœur (Heartbreak Ridge) and Arrow Head, earning a reputation as an elite unit within the 2nd US Infantry Division. At the cost of 269 killed, over 1,000 wounded and numerous French, American and South Korean decorations. Claude RAVALET was part of the first contingent, serving as a signalman in the 1st Company.
