Description
Helmet of the 116th or 117th infantry regiment of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt - officer's model 1871/99. The bomb of this helmet is undented and undamaged, as is the nape of the neck. The visor is slightly marked at the base by the pair of curved scale chinstraps. Only the nape is lined on the inside with red chagrin, while the visor remains in raw leather. The sweatband is made from beautiful burgundy leather and the silk headpiece is unbleached. The fluted tip can be unscrewed, identifying a headdress attributed to an officer of the 116th or 117th Infantry Regiment, units that wear a black horsehair haarbusch in full dress uniform. As expected, the four nails securing the cross-shaped base have round heads (Hessian officers' helmets do not use stars). The roundels are of the officer model with the white ribboned Landeskokarde with two red inner circles. A very fine helmet, perfectly in keeping with the model worn at the beginning of the 20th century by the infantry officers of this Grand Duchy, and which would make an admirable addition to a collection of Imperial German Army headgear. Officer's model 1871/99 helmet of the 116th or 117th Infantry Regiment of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. The shell and rear visor are unrepaired and without damage. The front visor shows slight marking at its base caused by the domed scale chinstraps. Only the rear visor is lined internally with red morocco leather, while the front visor remains in natural leather. The sweatband is made of fine burgundy toned leather and the silk liner is cream coloured. The fluted spike is removable, indicating a helmet attributed to an officer of the 116th or 117th Infantry Regiment, units authorised to wear a black horsehair haarbusch in full dress. As appropriate, the four spike base fasteners are rounded studs, Hessian officer helmets not using star fittings. The cockades are officer's pattern with the Hessian state cockade featuring a white ring with two inner red circles. A superb helmet perfectly conforming to the model worn at the beginning of the twentieth century by infantry officers of the Grand Duchy and an excellent addition to any Imperial German headgear collection.
