Bronze plaque Ville Martyre de Breteuil by Henry Dropsy. Bronze plaque depicting Marshal Pétain on his horse, surmounted by the words Le Maréchal à Breteuil ville Martyre de l'Oise. The lower part shows a view of the town, surmounted by the words Une France nouvelle est née (A new France is born), a France made by your trials, your remorse and your sacrifices, just as you will know how to make it beautiful from now on. Plaque signed Henry Dropsy. Mounted on a later frame. Size of the plaque 41cm x 15cm. This plaque is part of a series produced exclusively for martyred towns, i.e. those that had been bombed by Allied aircraft. These plaques, the exact number of which is unknown, were never distributed. A very small number of them were found in the 1980s by Bertrand Franquez, a Parisian dealer as knowledgeable as he is renowned. The one we are presenting today comes from this lot. This is an extremely rare plaque that could be considered an official award, although it has not been homologated. Bronze plaque titled "Ville Martyre de Breteuil" by Henry Dropsy. Upper section shows Marshal Pétain on horseback, inscribed "Le Maréchal à Breteuil ville Martyre de l'Oise." The lower section shows a view of the town with the inscription "A new France is born, this France is your trials, your regrets, your sacrifices, you have forged it, now you will know how to make it beautiful." Signed Henry Dropsy. Mounted on a modern backing. Plaque dimensions 41 × 15 cm. This plaque is part of a series commissioned exclusively for towns bombed by Allied air forces. The number produced is unknown, and they were never officially distributed. A small number were discovered in the 1980s by a well-known Paris dealer, Bertrand Franquez. The one presented here comes from that group. This is considered one of the rarest commemorative plaques, although it was never officially homologated.
