Description
Commander's Cross of the Military Order of Savoy. A white enamelled cross pattee, centred on a medallion bearing the arms of Savoie, a white cross on a red background, surrounded by the motto Al Merito Militare. The decoration is suspended from a blue moiré silk ribbon, worn in a saltire around the neck. It symbolises honour and military valour in the service of the Kingdom of Sardinia, then the Kingdom of Italy after unification. The Military Order of Savoy was instituted in 1815 by King Victor-Emmanuel I to reward officers who had distinguished themselves by their bravery and merit in battle. The coin shows some wear and patina. Condition I-.
