Description
Italian insignia recovered by Edouard Méric Compagnon de la Libération, 13 May 1943. Beautiful old frame, cardboard board with the insignia of the Horse Artillery, an insignia of a Royal Army vehicle, a colonial helmet roundel and a corner of an artillery collar. Handwritten mention Tunisia Zriba 13 May 1943. Édouard Méric, born on 20 July 1901 in Marseille and died on 29 May 1973 in Paris, was a companion of the Liberation. The son of a general officer, Édouard Méric was a student at the École militaire de Saint-Cyr, graduating with the "Souvenir" class. He joined the infantry and was head of the Office of Indigenous Affairs in Foum Zguid, Tata and Guelmim between 1935 and 1939. Then a captain, he became assistant to the director of Indigenous Affairs in Rabat and attended a course at the Centre des hautes études d'administration musulmane CHEAM in Algiers in 1941. The following year, he took part in preparations for the Anglo-American landing on 8 November, with the Algiers conspirators, which led to his imprisonment. After his release, he was appointed to General Giraud's General Staff, then became Chief of Staff of the 2nd Moroccan Tabors Group, 2nd GTM in January 1943, before taking command of the 1st Tabor, with which he took the centre of the Ousselat massif, capturing 250 prisoners and a large amount of war material. He distinguished himself at Aïn Djeloula, taking around 60 prisoners, and defeated the last enemy resistance at Zriba on 11 and 12 May, capturing a large number of prisoners and a large amount of war material. As a battalion commander, he distinguished himself during the capture of the Teghime Pass on 1 and 3 October 1943, then during the liberation of the island of Elba on 17-18 June 1944, and landed in Provence with General de Lattre's B army. The coin shows some wear and patina.
