Description
Second Empire porpoise cap. Cap made of dark blue cloth with scarlet piping. Brass insignia, fine gold chinstrap held in place by two colonial infantry buttons. Flat leather visor, two-thirds of the seams broken, black leather sweatband and black sateen lining. A cardboard sweatband was later placed under the headband. Height 12cm. This headdress is still called a cap, the term képi not appearing in the JMO until 1874. Second Empire marsouin forage cap. Constructed in dark blue cloth with scarlet piping. Applied brass insignia and fine gilt chinstrap secured by two colonial infantry buttons. Flat leather visor with stitching loose over two-thirds of its length, black leather sweatband and black sateen lining. A cardboard reinforcing band was later inserted beneath the sweatband. Height 12 cm. This headgear still bears the designation casquette, the term képi only appearing in regimental records from 1874 onwards.
