Description
SS dagger model 1933 signed Röhm and partially erased Herder. This is another exceptional dagger but, unlike the previous example, the owner of this one has had a very light sanding operation carried out to remove Ernst Röhm's signature. In fact, the dedication remains in its entirety and the signature is still perfectly visible. One can guess that the owner was somewhat reluctant to remove Ernst Röhm's name. However, this procedure was not without its dangers at the time, as failure to comply with Himmler's directives could result in severe penalties, especially for a member of the Black Order. The fuse shows a few signs of tampering, attesting to the fact that this dagger was worn, even though it was dangerous for its owner's safety. The pastille at the top of the fuse with the double runes has a coppery appearance. This type of disc is generally found on daggers made from early cupro-nickel, which was originally covered with a layer of silver plating. This has disappeared with use over time. The hilt bears the Roman numeral II on the back, indicating that this example passed through the SS control and distribution centre in Dresden. The blade bears minor traces of oxidation, but this does not detract from the overall quality of the piece. The motto and dedication are in very good condition and only the signature is partly faded. This work appears to have been carried out by a professional. The maker's mark, Herder, is perfect. To date, only seven manufacturers are known to have produced these signed Ernst Röhm daggers, and Herder never used a small logo on this type of dagger. The scabbard retains 90% of its black tan and shows a few traces of oxidation. This type of dagger, still bearing Ernst Röhm's dedication with the signature barely erased, is very rarely encountered; more often than not, the signature is completely erased. This is an exceptional piece that is very difficult to find today. This dagger is featured on page 33 of the reference book L'ordre noir, Armes blanches, traditions et symbolique, published by Heimdal - 2023. SS Dagger Model 1933 Röhm Dedication Partially Erased Herder Another exceptional dagger but unlike the previous example the owner of this one had the Röhm signature lightly ground away. The dedication remains fully intact and the signature is still clearly visible. This suggests a certain hesitation by the owner to completely remove Ernst Röhm's name. Such partial erasure was not without risk at the time as failure to comply with Himmler's directives could result in severe punishment especially for a member of the Black Order. The grip shows light handling traces indicating the dagger was worn despite the danger it represented for its owner. The grip emblem with the double runes shows a coppery hue, typical of early production pieces made of cupro-nickel originally plated with silver, the plating having worn off over time. The crossguard bears the Roman numeral II stamped on the reverse indicating inspection through the SS control and distribution center in Dresden. The blade shows only light oxidation that does not affect the overall appearance. The motto and dedication are in very good condition with only the signature partially erased, a work that appears to have been professionally executed. The maker mark Herder is perfectly preserved. Only seven makers are known to have produced these Röhm dedication daggers and Herder never used the small logo on this type. The scabbard retains 90% of its black finish with some light oxidation. Daggers that still retain the Röhm dedication with only the signature partially erased are extremely rare since in most examples the entire inscription was removed. Exceptional and very hard to find today. This dagger is featured on page 33 of L'ordre noir, Armes blanches, traditions et symbolique, published by Heimdal in 2023.
