Description
SS dagger model 1933 signed "Himmler" (Carl Eickhorn). Perhaps the most coveted dagger and certainly the most emblematic of the Black Order. This is an autographed dagger of SS-Reichführer Heinrich Himmler. The body of his rival Röhm had not yet cooled before Himmler, in turn, handed out a so-called 'Dagger of Honour' (Ehrendolch) to the most loyal of his SS men. The black fuse is in good condition, with a very small area of damage on the obverse. This minor damage is typical of Himmler daggers, for which Carl Eickhorn, the only manufacturer authorised to produce them, uses ebony, a material that becomes brittle over time. The fittings (dagger and scabbard) are in nickel silver, as they should be, and there is no Roman numeral on the back of the hilt. Indeed, daggers bearing Heinrich Himmler's dedication never have this marking, which is one of the features of this dagger. The second characteristic is the presence, under one end of the hilt, of a number from 0 to 9. This dagger is stamped with the number 7, a stamp applied during the quality control carried out before the dagger left the Carl Eickhorn factory. The blade is in good condition and features Himmler's dedication and signature on the reverse. It is interesting to note that this dedication uses the same text as that given by Ernst Röhm. Only Carl Eickhorn was authorised to produce this dagger and his mark on the reverse of the blade is still a small model (three different types of this logo are known to have been affixed to this blade). The scabbard retains around 95% of its original black tan. There are a few traces of oxidation on both sides of the scabbard. It has often been claimed that only 200 daggers of this model were produced. However, this number appears to be inaccurate, and the reality is that just over two thousand daggers were produced with Himmler's dedication (see the study on page 35 of the reference work L'ordre noir, Armes blanches, traditions et symbolique, published by Heimdal 2023. This dagger is in very good overall condition and remains a difficult piece to find on the collector's market given the craze it generates. SS Dagger Model 1933 Himmler Dedication (Carl Eickhorn) Perhaps the most coveted and certainly the most emblematic dagger of the Black Order. This example bears the dedication of SS Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler. Shortly after the death of his rival Röhm, Himmler awarded his own so-called Honour Dagger (Ehrendolch) to his most loyal SS members. The black grip is in good condition with a small area of surface wear on the obverse, a typical feature of Himmler daggers, which were made exclusively by Carl Eickhorn, the only authorized manufacturer. The fittings on dagger and scabbard are nickel silver as expected, and there is no Roman numeral on the reverse of the crossguard. Indeed, daggers bearing the Himmler dedication never carry such inspection marks, one of the characteristics of this model. A second feature is a small number, from 0 to 9, stamped under one end of the lower crossguard, this example bearing the number 7. It corresponds to a quality control stamp applied before leaving the Eickhorn factory. The blade is in good condition, showing on the reverse the dedication and the signature of Himmler. The wording of this dedication is identical to that on the daggers presented by Ernst Röhm. Only Carl Eickhorn was authorised to produce these daggers, and his small logo type always appears on the reverse of the blade. Three variations of this logo have been recorded. The scabbard retains about 95% of its original black finish with slight oxidation on both sides. Although it has long been said that only 200 examples were produced, research indicates that just over 2,000 Himmler dedication daggers were actually made. See the study on page 35 of L'ordre noir, Armes blanches, traditions et symbolique published by Heimdal in 2023. This dagger is in very fine condition overall and remains one of the most sought-after pieces on the collectors' market due to the strong demand it generates.
