Description
SS exit bayonet - model KS 98 (Carl Eickhorn). Very popular with mountain hunter units, this model has plates carved from deer antlers. It seems that the guard quillon was removed by a professional at the time. This was a common modification given the discomfort that this part of the hilt could cause. The handle is quite marked by the passage of time. The nickel-plated blade features an engraving enclosed in a cartouche decorated with oak leaves, which refers to the 6th SS Mountain Hunters North Division (6.SS-Geb.Div.Nord). On either side of the unit reference are edelweiss on the left and double runes in a circle on the right. The push button is active and the 20cm blade has the Solingen maker's mark Eickhorn (1935-1941) on the reverse. This weapon, which was delivered from 1943 (the unit's new name), was therefore fitted with a stock blade engraved to order. The scabbard retains traces of its original tanning and also shows signs of corrosion. The black leather scabbard is quite supple but is split above the attachment hook. Although the quality of this bayonet is not first-rate, it remains in fair condition and should be classed as a rare item from a famous and emblematic Waffen SS unit. SS Dress Bayonet Model KS 98 (Carl Eickhorn) Favoured among mountain troops this model features grips made of stag horn. The crossguard quillon appears to have been professionally removed at the time a common modification as the guard could be cumbersome in use. The grip shows age wear. The nickel-plated blade bears an engraved panel surrounded by oak leaves referencing the 6th SS Mountain Division Nord (6.SS-Geb.Div.Nord) with an edelweiss on the left and SS runes within a circle on the right. The push button works properly and the 20 cm blade is stamped on the reverse ricasso with the Eickhorn trademark (1935-1941) Solingen. Issued after 1943 under the division's new designation this example was probably assembled from a pre-engraved stock blade. The scabbard retains much of its original blueing with some corrosion. The black leather frog remains supple but shows a tear above the belt loop. Although not of the highest finish this bayonet remains in good overall condition and should be regarded as a rare example from a renowned Waffen SS mountain unit.
