Description
A memento from Guy-Joseph de Donnissan. A Vendée Sacred Heart, in red cloth, embroidered in white thread with the words ‘Dieu et mon R--’, sewn onto white fabric with a scalloped edge, on a jute background, adorned at the base with a small round medallion featuring a fleur-de-lis and, on either side, a piece of paper with rounded corners, handwritten in ink ‘In memory of Jay Joseph de Donnissan, Marquis de Citran, born on 7 February 1737 in Bordeaux, shot on 8 January 1794 in Angers’ and ‘at the age of 56, he was captured at Montrelais near Varades. May passers-by remember him and pray for his soul’’. Presented under glass in a round, chiselled brass frame. On the reverse, a rectangular label, printed and enhanced with watercolour, featuring a motif of revolutionary soldiers and flags, and inscribed ‘Unity, Indivisibility of the Republic, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, or Death’. Guy-Joseph de Donnissan, Marquis of Donnissan and Citran (1737–1794), He took part in all the campaigns of the Seven Years’ War; in 1762, he succeeded his father as Grand Seneschal of Guyenne, Field Marshal, and Knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis. In 1789, he was in the service of the royal family, then retired to the Médoc. In 1793, he was suspected by the Revolutionaries and arrested. He was freed by the Vendéens, joined the Catholic and Royal Army as a General, President of the Vendée Council and Governor of the King. Following the Vendéens’ defeat at the Battle of Cholet, he took part in the Virée de Galerne and was captured whilst crossing the Loire. Tried and sentenced to death in Angers, he was shot.
