Description
Kerborn Battery plate. Beige ceramic. Decorated with a ship. Markings Batterie Kerbonn Kriegsweihnachten 1943. Made by HB Quimper RK. Diameter 27.3 cm. The Kerbonn battery was built in 1889. It was originally a battery for 3 x 270 mm coastal mortars, model 1889. Two years later, it was fitted with an under-rock gunpowder magazine and a concrete fire control post. The battery's mission was to combat ships that had entered Brest harbour and prevent them from anchoring. During the Second World War, the battery was used as a heavy battery by the Germans. A new battery was built between 1942 and 1944 to house 4 French 164mm guns (recovery guns) in casemates. Slight wear and patina. Very rare plate model. Condition I-. Kerborn Battery plate.
