Description
Badge of the La Palice submarine base. Painted metal. Marked Kriegsmarinewerft La Palice, number 1293. Complete fastening. No visible markings. Some wear and patina. Condition II+. When the Second World War broke out, La Palice's destiny changed. In 1941, the German occupiers requisitioned the site and launched a major project: the construction of a submarine base. This titanic project was part of the Atlantic Wall, a vast defensive system designed to prevent an Allied landing on the French coast. The base built at La Rochelle is quite simply impressive. Covering an area of 3.5 hectares, it was designed to house the 3rd flotilla of German submarines. Inside, ten cells dug directly into the water act as giant garages, capable of housing up to 13 U-boats. La Pallice submarine base insignia. Painted metal construction. Marked Kriegsmarinewerft La Palice, number 1293. Complete attachment. No visible maker's marks. Showing honest wear and patina. Condition II+. During the Second World War, La Pallice became a major Kriegsmarine submarine base. Constructed from 1941 as part of the Atlantic Wall, the facility covered approximately 3.5 hectares and included ten submarine pens capable of housing up to thirteen U-boats.
