Description
U-109 earthenware tile. In coloured ceramic, representing the symbol of U-109. This tile comes from the ruins of a bunker in Lorient in which the Soldatenheim was located. When the Germans left, the bunker was scuttled. This tile was found in the remains of the same bunker. A Youtube film has been made about it. Tile broken and glued back together. Made by Henriot Quimper. Dimensions 11.5 x 11.5 cm. Some wear and patina. Condition II+. It left Kiel for its first patrol under the command of Korvettenkapitän Hans-Georg Fischer on 6 May 1941. After 24 days at sea and a result of 5,173 tons, she reached the Lorient submarine base. Leaving Lorient on 28 April 1943 for her ninth patrol, U-109 was sunk on 4 May 1943, after seven days at sea, south of Ireland by depth charges launched by a British Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber (Squadron 86/P).
