The Unterseeboot 47 or U-47 is a German submarine (U boot) of type VII.B built for the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War. It is most famous for sinking the battleship HMS Royal Oak at the British base of Scapa Flow. This submarine had the 10th best record of all the U-Boats of the Second World War, with a total of 191,919 tons of civilian and military vessels sunk (31 ships). She carried out her first patrol, leaving the port of Kiel on 19 August 1939, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien, to sail in the Bay of Biscay, rounding the British Isles from the north via the North Sea. After 28 days at sea, she reached Kiel on 15 September 1939. The success of the U-47 was taken up by Nazi propaganda, which awarded its commander, Günther Prien, the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with oak leaves. During its tenth patrol, having left the Lorient submarine base on 20 February 1941, U-47 was reported missing on 7 March 1941, after 16 days at sea. It is presumed to have been sunk by the British destroyer HMS Wolverine to the west of Ireland. U-47 profile plate. Aluminium construction. Numerous U-47 markings. Traces of several mounting points on the reverse. Dimensions 27.5 × 5 cm. Showing honest wear and patina. Condition II+.
