Description
German bust. Beautiful German bust in bronze, very finely chased. Marble base, still with its original red felt. Height of the bust 40 cm. Dimensions of the base 12 x 40 x 40 cm. A few chips in the corners of the base. Artist's signature W Hanebal. Signature of the founder GUSS-G Schmäke. According to the seller, this bust came from an embassy in Paris. In view of the quality of the bust, it could have been located at the German Consulate General in Paris at the Palais de Beauharnais, 78 rue de Lille. Under the National Socialist regime, Hanebal was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts. His participation in eighteen collective exhibitions during this period is attested with certainty. He produced so-called contemporary sculptures, imbued with a rhetoric of glorification of war, including a bust of Hitler. In 1938, 1939, 1941 and 1943, he was represented at the Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung in Munich, where eight of his sculptures were exhibited. In 1938, the bronze statuette Kniende was bought by Hitler for 550 Reichsmarks. Gustav Schmäke (1887-1954) founded the Kunstgießerei Schmäke on 1 April 1926 in Düsseldorf. Gustav Schmäke managed his art foundry during this period. The foundry worked for many renowned artists before, during and after the war, including Arno Brecker. Some wear and patina. Condition I-.
