A fine Model 1896 Cavalry Officer’s sabre, first size, produced by the Châtellerault Arms Factory in 1903, as evidenced by the mark on the back of the blade, straight blade with a flat back, a counter-edge with a concave ‘V’-shaped fuller, a beautiful symmetrical, wraparound hilt in chiselled gilded bronze with re-pierced floral decoration, a short-tailed pommel with relief decoration of an oak and laurel wreath, a filigree-worked black horn tang, a fine flat sword knot in gilded cannetille braid, the body featuring a chequered pattern, and a fine free-hanging gilded fringe, in its single-strap steel sheet scabbard.
