USA"; the left side of the frame bears the marking "Pat. Sept. 19 1871, Pat. 2 July 1872" and a stamped "U.S."; the frame bears a large "S" stamped above the serial number; barrel 140 mm long (5¼ inches), smooth walnut grips; the metal has uniformly turned a tobacco-grey colour; smooth bore – no rifling?; a few barely visible file marks and shallow dents on the barrel and frame.
