Description
An interesting Vincennes light infantry officer’s sabre, Model 1838, with a flat blade featuring a reed-patterned back; the reed pattern extends along the final quarter of the blade into a reinforcing ridge connecting the point and separating the cutting edge from the back edge; the back of the blade bears a cursive inscription that is difficult to decipher. The hilt is of chiselled gilded bronze, with a long-tailed cap; the main guard branch is pierced at the pommel to allow the sword strap to pass through; at the centre of this branch, a raised ring with a floral design adorns it, from which a secondary branch—forming the lip of the guard plate—extends to the base of the quillon. The main guard is openwork, decorated with a motif of falling banners (4) alongside an oak branch and a laurel branch, a quillon curled forwards and decorated with a star; the blade is made of black horn with iron filigree, housed in a steel sheet scabbard with two bands.
Blade length: 760 mm
