Description
A superb flintlock blunderbuss by Michel Berleur, with a square-sided barrel tapering to a conical shape with a flared muzzle, the two sections of the barrel separated by a ring highlighted by two lines, a sturdy round-bodied lock, a swan-neck hammer reinforced by a foot connecting the lower jaw to the hammer’s elbow (a precursor to the ‘à spalet’ hammer), a sturdy iron firing mechanism with a slight upturn and a central ridge, a firing spring with a roller screwed in from the inside, the sides of the lock body, bevelled at the top and framing the spring, bear the signature ‘Michel’ at the top and ‘Berleur’ at the bottom; the gun is fitted with a steel frame, a round trigger guard decorated with a radiating sun motif, and a long-curved butt plate also decorated with a sun, the hood forms a ramrod channel at the rear and a second ramrod channel at the front, with a fine light walnut stock, the breech tail is framed by a fine relief carving that sets it off to advantage, and the rear wood inlays on the trigger guard and counter-guard are finished with a teardrop-shaped relief, the grip is finely checkered at right angles with a powder-grain pattern, the barrel has been neatly dressed along its length and the angles have been preserved. A slight and discreet joint is visible on the right-hand side of the barrel’s crown,
