A fine late German-style wheel-lock arquebus (mid-17th century). A heavily rifled, orthogonal barrel (7 basket-handle rifling grooves, calibre 20 balls per pound). Flat lock plate decorated with a war scene against a backdrop of a besieged city; in the foreground, on a shield, is a fine engraving depicting Judith beheading Holofernes. Sturdy trigger guard engraved with a sea creature. Guilloché-engraved springs. Spring foot bracket running along the re-brazed chain. Guilloché-engraved wheel spring. Iron-mounted firearm, with a finger rest on the trigger guard protecting a direct trigger. Beautiful dark walnut stock, smooth with delicate floral engravings on the right-hand side of the butt plate. Fluted magazine with alternating wood and horn sections. Rear rail, horn cap, barely legible signature on an engraved band reading ‘Georg Gutav in XXX?’
