A fine late German-style wheel-lock arquebus (mid-17th century). A heavily rifled, orthogonal barrel (7 basket-handle rifling grooves, calibre 20 balls per pound). Flat lock plate decorated with a war scene against a backdrop of a besieged city; in the foreground, on a shield, is a fine engraving depicting Judith beheading Holofernes. Sturdy trigger guard engraved with a sea creature. Guilloché-engraved springs. Spring foot bracket running along the re-brazed chain. Guilloché-engraved wheel spring. Iron-mounted firearm, with a finger rest on the trigger guard protecting a direct trigger. Beautiful dark walnut stock, smooth with delicate floral engravings on the right-hand side of the butt plate. Fluted magazine with alternating wood and horn sections. Rear rail, horn cap, barely legible signature on an engraved band reading ‘Georg Gutav in XXX?’ Key missing. Movable hammer.
