Description
Short Chassepot carbine from the Imperial Manufactory at Mutzig, this musketon was converted into a captured cavalry musketon for the German army and modified to centre-fire for the 11 mm Mauser cartridge; an extractor was also added, bearing the number 55 (the last digit of the weapon’s serial number), steel grenadier plate secured by a pin and numbered to match the weapon’s serial number; a short, screw-on muzzle cap typical of captured weapons, made of steel with a swivelling front sight on a dovetail mount protected by two lugs; complete with cleaning rod, mirror-polished barrel, rear sight with graduations added to the right-hand side of the base, numerous German acceptance marks, functional mechanism, varnished walnut stock bearing the weapon’s serial number. Regimental designation on the back of the butt plate: ‘G.R.U.2.76’ (76th unit of the Second Reserve Uhlan Regiment of the Guard) Weapon no. E22355 except for the breech no. J21469 Condition 1 Category D weapon
