Description
A rare and interesting flintlock pistol of the King’s Bodyguard, in accordance with the 1731 regulations, a 400 mm long smoothbore barrel, square-cut at the muzzle then round, with a flat band and a half-moon-shaped iron front sight; a flat-bodied lock plate, signed ‘BARALLON CARRIER’ with a hallmark featuring a fleur-de-lis surmounted by the letters ‘S.E’ (Saint Etienne), flat swan-neck hammer, faceted iron hammer head, firing spring screwed in from the outside, the weapon fitted with iron fittings, a cap with two long struts and a prominent nail (unadorned or unmarked), flat trigger guard with bevelled edges, beveled barrel channels, the last of which forms a hood, counter-plate with a stylised fleur-de-lis cut-out at the rear, the said counter-plate underlined by a line and bearing no number, iron thumb rest on which an oval escutcheon bearing fleurs-de-lis can be discerned in the centre, the said escutcheon crowned, small iron muzzle cap, fine dark walnut stock with a varnish finish, free from repairs, cracks or splits, the wooden inlay on the plate, counter-plate and breech tail decorated with a teardrop in relief carved from the solid wood of the mount. A few pitting marks; the weapon has been repolished and features a rear rod. Mechanism in working order.

A rare pre-regulation pistol which, apart from a few minute details (the absence of engraving on the cap pin and the trigger guard), corresponds to the model used by the Bodyguards of the much-loved Louis XV.
