Born in Algiers in 1890, Boujemâa Lamali trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Algiers and at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres. He chose to settle permanently in the town of Safi in 1919, the start of his period of activity.
The artist founded a ceramics school, the first of its kind in Morocco and Africa. Lamali's work influenced most of Safi's ceramists, including Al-Sousi, Serghini AlTaher, Abdelgader Leghrissi, Mohamed Rbati Sentil and many others. He helped make Safi the capital of Moroccan ceramics after Fès, and represented Morocco at numerous international exhibitions. Boujemãa Lamali died in 1971, leaving behind a rich repertoire of works containing 450 objects, most of which have been recovered and preserved by the National Ceramics Museum in Safi.
