Miçao Kono was a Japanese artist who lived in France during the Roaring Twenties. His first major exhibition in Paris was at the Bernheim gallery in 1930, with twenty-five of his paintings. However, Kono was already making a name for himself at the salons (Salon d'Automne and Salon des Indépendants). That same year, the painter won the Nikwa Prize, the equivalent of the Salon d'Automne in Tokyo. He is particularly famous for his voluptuous nudes, often accompanied by Harlequin and depicting characters from the Commedia dell'arte. During this period, his paintings became very fashionable, as they blended perfectly with Art Deco interiors. Romantic and sensual, his work was similar to that of Japanese painters living in France, such as Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita. He worked with Foujita at the start of his career, developing his taste for French art without denying his Japanese origins. Kono also owed his taste for the light harmonies of his palette to Marie Laurencin.
