Description
Elephant
A bronze and biscuit porcelain proof representing an oriental elephant carrying on its back a kind of stick or palanquin known as a "howdah". It stands on a bronze base in the Barbedienne style.
French work in the oriental style, can be used as a lamp if fitted with electricity.
H: 24, W: 20 cm
A howdah carried by an elephant was used to transport wealthy people, to carry them while hunting, or to wage war. It was also a symbol of wealth for its owner. Today, elephants are used in Arab wedding processions and by tourists. They are also found attached to the backs of camels or dromedaries, particularly in the Muslim world.
This biscuit porcelain elephant is similar to those produced by Sèvres, Meissen, Royal Dux, Kpm and Wedgwood.
