Description
Banquet scene
Iran, probably Tehran, late 19th century
A square glazed and moulded ceramic wall tile, bordered by a frieze of floral motifs. The central panel depicts an outdoor banquet scene, centred on the figure of a sovereign seated on a throne, surrounded by courtiers, musicians and servants. The group is gathered around a tablecloth laid with dishes, goblets, fruit and an incense burner, in a setting reminiscent of a garden or a covered terrace.
30 x 31 cm
Condition: broken and glued; restoration required.
This panel is part of the production of figurative ceramics from Tehran during the late Qajar period, influenced by Persian miniatures and European painting, and intended to adorn the walls of princely residences or public spaces. This type of depiction idealises court life, where refinement, abundance and social hierarchy intermingle, reflecting the cultural aspirations of the Persian bourgeoisie in the late 19th century.
A Qajar moulded and polychrome underglaze-painted earthenware tile depicting a royal banquet, Iran, late 19th century.
