Description
Polish school, 19th century. Portrait of Jan Zamoyski (1542–1605), Grand Chancellor and Grand Hetman of the Crown, wearing a red cloak with a fur collar fastened with a gold buckle. Oil on copper. H: 7.6 cm x 6.3 cm (minor losses and restorations) Late 19th-century rectangular gutta-percha frame, spandrels with floral decoration, gilded brass visor, 13.4 x 12.2 cm. Based on an official portrait, a version of which is held at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Zamoyski enjoyed a brilliant career in Poland, where he held, in an unprecedented combination, the posts of Grand Chancellor and Grand Hetman (Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces) of the Crown. He married the niece of Stephen Báthory, King of Poland, to whom he was close; he served as starost and then defender of Kraków in 1587 against the army of Maximilian II of Austria, and facilitated the accession to the throne of Sigismund III Vasa, whom he eventually came to oppose. He amassed vast estates, particularly around Szarogród, where he founded the Zamojska Academy to educate young nobles. A strategist and patron of the arts, he is regarded as one of the most eminent—albeit controversial—statesmen in Polish history. Miniature portraits of him are rare. Description in Polish: Polish school, 19th century. Portrait of Jan Zamoyski (1542–1605), Grand Chancellor and Grand Hetman of the Crown, wearing a red cloak with a fur collar, fastened with a gold buckle. Oil on copper. Height: 7.6 cm (minor losses). A rectangular frame from the late 19th century made of gutta-percha, with corners featuring floral decoration and a gilded brass canopy. Based on the official portrait, a version of which is held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Zamoyski enjoyed a brilliant career in Poland, uniquely combining the offices of Grand Chancellor and Grand Hetman (Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces) of the Crown. He married for the third time the niece of King Stefan Batory of Poland, with whom he was closely associated; he served as starost and subsequently as defender of Kraków in 1587 against the army of Maximilian II Habsburg, and facilitated the accession of Sigismund III Vasa to the throne, although he ultimately opposed him. He amassed vast estates, particularly around Szarogród, where he founded the Zamość Academy to educate the young nobility. A strategist and patron of the arts, he is regarded as one of the most outstanding, albeit controversial, statesmen in Polish history. Many artists produced posthumous portraits of him in the 18th and 19th centuries, but miniature versions are extremely rare. Expert: N. Lemoine-Bouchard.
