Description
17th-century Flemish school. Presumed portrait of Francisco de Moncada, Marquis of Aytona and Count of Ossuna (1586–1635), depicted as a young man in a black suit, with a small white ruff and a thin, upturned moustache. A diplomat, he served as governor of the States of Milan and the Spanish Netherlands. Oil on copper. Oval, 4.6 x 3.8 cm (restored). Gilded wooden frame, H. 7.5 cm On the reverse, a handwritten label identifying the work as belonging to John Whitley, a framer in London. Expert: N. Lemoine-Bouchard.
