Description
Late 18th-century French school. A young woman in a blue skirt and spencer, with a white bodice, holding a closed fan in her gloved hand, depicted in a three-quarter-length portrait facing right against a landscape. Miniature on ivory. Face diameter 6.6 cm. Gilded metal frame (minor knocks), diameter 9.2 cm. Weight: 55 g. According to the well-known symbolism of the fan in the late 18th century, holding it closed signified her fidelity, or even a refusal to yield to advances. Expert: N. Lemoine-Bouchard. A CITES certificate will be provided to the purchaser, permitting movement only within the European Union.
