French school of the late 18th and 19th centuries. Set of 9 miniatures depicting portraits of the de Petigny family, some identified on the reverse, with a lock of hair. 7 on ivory (1 cracked), 1 on porcelain (man in the centre), 1 on enamel (octagonal medallion bottom left, mid-18th century; with a hairline crack), the one top left signed ‘Petit’ and dated 1803, attributed to Louis-Marie Petit (Fontainebleau, 1784–after 1839) 1 cracked miniature (the one in the centre on the left), 5 from the 19th century, 4 from the 18th century. Mounted in gilded brass frames within a large rectangular 19th-century veneered wooden frame: 40.5 x 31.5 cm. The mounting of the lock of hair needs to be re-examined. Diameter: 7.4 cm, 7.3 cm, 7.1 cm (boy on the right). Oval pieces: 9.5 x 8.2 cm; 4 x 3.3 cm (on porcelain, 19th century); 3 x 1.9 cm (octagonal enamel); 4.8 x 4 cm; 3.2 x 2.8 cm (man bottom right) and 4.3 x 3.7 cm. Total weight: 1.125 kg According to the pen-and-ink labels on the reverse and our genealogical research, the figures in the top left are: Madame Anne-René-Joseph de Petigny, née Julie Lambert, as seen in 1803, and on the right her daughter, Madame Chaillou, née Anne de Petigny (1805–1875), circa 1830; in the centre left: Madame de Petigny, née Petigny de Saint Romain (c. 1775–1803); at the bottom left: François Romain de Petigny (1738–1811) (pictured as a child), future Secretary of the Seal to the Chancellor of France, and his wife, née Charlotte Félicité de Varennes (died 1783), married in 1773. The man in the centre is most likely Anne-René-Joseph de Pétigny (1767–1831), mayor of Lanneray, Eure-et-Loire, and owner of the Château de La Touche-Hersant. A widower following the death of Jeanne-Félicité de Petigny de St Romain, he married Julie Lambert in 1804.
