Maxime DAVID (Châlons-sur-Marne, 1798–Paris, 1870). A man with a thin moustache and goatee, wearing a black suit, black cravat and white waistcoat, in a half-length portrait facing to the right. A dark-haired woman in a black dress and white bodice, with a white veil adorned with artificial white flowers in her hair, styled in rolls, depicted in a half-length portrait facing left. A pair of large miniatures on ivory, the one of the man signed on the right: Maxime David 1849. Visible oval, H. 14 cm. The portrait of the woman, signed and dated on the left: Maxime David 1850. Rectangular gilded and moulded metal frames with hanging chains by Picart, H 23 cm. Respective weights: 445 g and 510 g. The man’s portrait: Fine cracks; the artist’s seam visible on the right to form the oval. The woman’s portrait: some flaking and stains As a pair and as matching pieces (both facing each other) Maxime David was awarded medals four times at the Salon (1835, 1836, 1841 and 1848) and was one of the few miniaturists to receive the Legion of Honour (1851). The pair we are presenting is among his large miniatures on ivory, comparable in size to the one depicting the Minister of the Interior, Léon Faucher, exhibited at the 1850 Salon (National Museum in Kraków, MNK III-min.250).
