Description
Frédéric MILLET (Charlieu, 1786–1859). Woman in a white lace dress and a black lace scarf tied round her neck, three-quarter-length portrait, resting her elbow on a surface, both hands visible, one holding a handkerchief. Very large miniature on ivory, signed and dated on the right in red: ‘Fic Millet 1857’. According to an inscription on the reverse, acquired on 5 April 1981 in Ghent from the antique dealer Gouden Paud. View size: 17.5 x 13.2 cm. Veneered wooden frame with a gilded brass visor, bearing the inscription: ‘Frédéric Millet 1857’ and forming an easel, rect. 27.5 x 21.5 cm. Total weight: 0.640 kg. Cracks around the edges which do not affect the subject. The label highlights not the subject but, which is rarer in the field of miniatures, the name of the miniaturist and the year of execution, 1857. Having held a prominent position amongst the miniaturists of his time, and having been awarded medals three times at the Salon, Millet exhibited there for the last time in 1857, under number 1935, two miniatures including the ‘portrait of Mrs P. C…. ’ with no mention of size. He died two years later and his self-portrait was donated to the Louvre by his son, the sculptor Aimé Millet. Expert: Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard.
