Miniature on ivory, signed and dated in gold on the right-hand side along the frame: ‘Laure Prévet 1909’

Inside the frame, a poem handwritten by the artist: ‘L’Absent / And when the gentle breeze / that comes from that sweet land / Where he is who entices me / I gladly turn my face towards it’

Laure Prévet was an artist and miniaturist before her marriage in 1912; she exhibited in 1911 at the Salon des femmes peintres et sculpteurs. Here she illustrates a 13th-century poem, attributed to the Lady of Fayel or to Guyot de Provins: it is a young girl speaking, separated from her fiancé who has gone off to fight in the Holy Land.
