Description
FRENCH SCHOOL Second half of the 19th century. Portrait of Madame Alfred Hervé, née Hortense Heiligenthal (Strasbourg 1835 – Paris 1932). Black chalk, watercolour and highlights in white gouache, oval in shape (minor oxidation). Annotated on the reverse on the backing board. H. 15 – W. 11.3 cm. Oval-shaped blackened wooden frame (crack at the top left). Marie – Victor – Alfred Hervé (1824–1861), assistant forestry inspector, married Hortense Heiligenthal on 11 October 1859. From their marriage came Alfred Hervé-Gruyer, known as Baron Hervé-Gruyer (1860–1828), who married in 1895 Marie - Louise - Eugénie Napoléone Murat, daughter of Joachim Murat (1828–1904).
