Description
FRENCH SCHOOL First half of the 19th century. Presumed portrait of a man obsessed with painting: the obsessive gaze, the hands clasped and clenched, the lapels of the frock coat stained with paint. Oil on canvas. H. 60.5 – W. 53.5 cm. The emergence of the theme of monomania in nineteenth-century painting, particularly during the Romantic period, coincided with the work of the physicians Philippe Pinel (1745–1826) and Étienne Esquirol (1772–1840), and later Étienne - Jean Georget (1795–1828), was discussed by Germain Bazin in his catalogue raisonné of Théodore Géricault’s work (Vol. VI, pp. 69–76 – Paris 1994).
