LONGUET Karl Jean, 1904–1981, Portrait of Karl Marx, patinated plaster (showing signs of wear and minor imperfections), signed on the side, Height: 26 cm; Length: 41 cm; Depth: 35 cm. Karl-Jean Longuet was the great-grandson of Karl Marx, through his grandfather Charles Longuet, a journalist exiled to London after the Paris Commune who married Jenny, Karl Marx’s eldest daughter. His father, Jean Longuet, was a lawyer and politician close to Jean Jaurès. In 1927, Karl-Jean Longuet enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paul Niclausse’s studio, then moved to Jean Boucher’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He admired Rodin and Maillol; Dina Vierny modelled for him, and he was visited by Charles Despiau. During the Second World War, he joined the Resistance. After the Liberation, he exhibited at the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture, worked with architects and created numerous monumental sculptures for public buildings. The bust of Karl Marx was exhibited at the 1930 Salon. One version is held at the Musée National d’Art Moderne, and another at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Reims.
