* MIRAPOLIS - Gargantua, plush circa 1987 Mirapolis is a French theme park that opened in 1987 in Cergy-Pontoise, Val-d'Oise. Inspired by tales, legends and French history, it was famous for its gigantic statue of Gargantua, which served as the entrance to the park. Despite major investment and a number of spectacular attractions, attendance was lower than expected. Faced with financial difficulties, the park closed its doors for good in 1991. Today, it remains one of the most striking examples of the major French leisure projects of the 1980s.
