WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) was founded in Germany and specialised in the production of metal objects in the "Jugendstil" (Art Nouveau) style. The company was very active, acquiring foreign companies between 1886 and 1905 and acquiring European expertise in metallurgy and the manufacture of decorative objects in pewter and galvanised metal, such as this inkwell.
Our example is listed in the WMF Catalogue of Samples published in 1920, under number 23970 (formerly 196), in the section devoted to inkwells. This document illustrates the importance of the factory's sales network, with warehouses in several major European cities (Leipzig, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Zurich).
