Description
Sèvres Plate from the service given by Louis XVI to Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, in soft porcelain decorated with a bouquet of roses in a medallion with a brown background surrounded by pearls in the centre and on the rim flowers in cartouches on a celestial blue background framed by gold palms and pearls. Marked in blue: double interlaced L, date letter HH, painter's mark Taillandier and gilder's mark Chauvaux. 18th century, circa 1785. D. 24 cm. A restored chip. This plate comes from a service presented by Louis XVI to his brother-in-law, Ferdinand-Charles, Archduke of Austria and Governor of the Duchy of Milan, and his wife, the Archduchess Marie-Béatrice d'Este, Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara. They went to Versailles in 1786, travelling incognito under the names of Count and Countess of Nellenburg. The decoration of the service is described as "celestial blue background, daisies, barbs and roses" in the sales records and comprised 72 plates at 36 livres each. In total, the service comprised 288 pieces at a cost of €24,000.
