Description
JAPAN, 18th-19th century
Large sculpture in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, representing Amida Nyorai standing on a double lotus-shaped base, her hands in raigo-in. The face looks serene, the eyes half-closed and the urna on the forehead. The hair is in very fine curls, topped with the ushnisha. The figure stands out in front of a high petal-shaped kohai mandorla, sculpted with scrolls and decorated with five small Buddhist figures, seated in meditation and standing in prayer, scattered around its perimeter.
