Description
Two Chinese porcelain cups with "Madame de Pompadour" decoration
Yongzheng (1723-1735) / Qianlong (1736-1795) period
Diameter: 28 cm
Polychrome-painted in a "predominantly blue" style, the interior with its characteristic decoration of peonies in a central medallion and four cartouches alternating an eagle and a fish around the cavetto.
Since the 19th century, art historians have attributed the commission for this service to King Louis XV's famous mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour. The eagles and fish in the cartouches symbolised King Louis XV and the Marquise de Pompadour, whose surname was Poisson. Michel Beurdeley has cast doubt on this tempting hypothesis, arguing that the Marquise de Pompadour could not have tolerated a service whose decorative elements were reminiscent of her plebeian origins.
