Description
Bowl with Kakiemon decoration. Japan, Arita, Edo period (1602-1868), circa 1700 Diameter: 20.7 cm The bowl is decorated in underglaze blue, enhanced with enamels in the Kakiemon palette. In the centre, a river landscape painted in underglaze blue depicts two boats near an islet, figures crossing a bridge and, in the distance, dwellings nestling in a mountainous landscape, all framed by a double circle in underglaze blue. The wing is decorated with enamelled peonies and camellias, punctuated by fruiting pomegranates and rocks in blue underglaze. A bowl with this decoration is in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It is illustrated by Oliver Impey in Japanese Export Porcelain: Catalogue of the Collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Amsterdam: Hotei Publishing, 2002, p. 128, no. 168).
