Description
CHINA, Ming dynasty, 17th century
Important gilded wood sculpture of Weituo Pusa The patron deity is depicted in his conquering form, his two feet firmly planted on a quadrangular base carved with clouds from which dragons spring. In one hand, he holds a long, elaborate dagger with a dragon's head on the base, the other hand resting on his hip. He is dressed in a richly executed suit of armour, alternating between different renditions of brocade and mesh, the ventral plastron taking the form of a chimera's head. The face has a serene expression, while the head is topped with an elaborate ceremonial-style helmet with a tail and flanked by dragon motifs. A holding element, added later, secures the sculpture to its base.
