Description
Hallmark or saddler's awl with secret screw - masterwork for a gift piece ? France, 18th century.
Wrought iron; overall length: 13.7 cm; handle dimensions: 4.3x4.3 cm.
It is likely that this very luxurious leather hallmark was given to an apprentice who had become a master.
The handle is in the shape of a heart and a spade, reminiscent of the handles of highly worked master keys. It is extended by a perforated ball.
A tapered octagonal scabbard conceals the punch. The punch can be uncovered by turning a small hidden screw. This does not press on the punch so as not to mark it, but is inserted into a groove that prevents the scabbard from slipping.
A superb and rare piece of masterwork by a master saddler.
