Description
Horizontal rectangular potence dial by Pierre Lemaire, circa 1750. Brass, steel and glass; 10.9x7.2cm and approximately 12cm high. Brass sundial signed "Pre le maire à Paris", i.e. Pierre I Lemaire, son of Nicolas Lemaire. Lemaire developed this form of rectangular sundial, of which he made and sold examples in two different sizes. The present model is the large one. The large rectangular plate is engraved with three hour scales for latitudes of 43, 46 and 52 degrees. In the centre, a rectangular opening reveals the large elongated compass, the bottom of which is engraved with the four cardinal points and north with a fleur-de-lys. It is divided into two times 0-30 degrees. The height of the wire-axis gnomon can be adjusted on its large bracket from 40 to 55 degrees. The wire is kept taut by the presence of a lead, which also serves to level the dial perfectly by the set of four wedge screws that support the plate. On the back, a screw set into the perimeter of the compass allows the length of the gnomon wire to be adjusted. The names and latitudes of 14 French and European cities are also engraved. The stem spring is beautifully engraved. The dial is preserved in its shaped case covered with fish skin and lined with red velvet. Beautiful original condition.
